The History Of Devon Dowsers

Devon Dowsers was formed in late 1992 when John Bowers was teaching introductory ‘Dowsing for Beginners’ classes at Chulmleigh, South Molton and Okehampton Community Colleges which were proving very popular.

It was after one of these that John Down, who attended the South Molton class, suggested that it might be a good idea if there was some sort of follow up so people could meet and practice together afterwards.

So he, John Bowers, John Lott and Michelle Boyd decided to form the Devon Dowsers and the response was overwhelming. Over forty people attended the classes at Okehampton which boosted the membership a lot. The early meetings’ speakers included Donovan the Diviner, and David Crow who ran the Henge bookshop at Avebury. The first AGM was held in November 1993.

They continued to meet at the South Molton and Okehampton Community Colleges for some time before moving to the Fox and Hounds at Eggesford. In 2014 it was decided to relocate to the Red Lion Hotel at Chulmleigh.

In 1993 the first magazine, Devon Dowsers News, was published with John Lott as Editor. This included a competition for the Society’s logo, and details of the first all day field trip to Avebury in September 1993 which forty seven people attended.

The library was started with over forty books on Dowsing and related subjects which members could borrow; also DIDI Divine’s shop with pendulums, Mager Rosettes, rods and other relevant items for sale.

At one point in its history Devon Dowsers was the largest dowsing society in the country with over 200 members.

Discover Dowsing in Devon – First Workshop

Dowsing the Iron Age settlement of Berry Castle at Huntshaw will be the first of the “Discover Dowsing in Devon” Workshops and will take place on Saturday 24th June 2017. Places will be limited and further details will be posted soon. “Discover Dowsing in Devon” will be a series of on-site dowsing workshops run throughout the year and open to anyone interested in learning how to dowse archaeological sites; earth energies; ancient sites; or how to dowse for utilities and water. Workshops will be led by members of Devon Dowsers at different locations around Devon. They will be both informative and fun but could also leave you a little astonished at what you can discover by dowsing!

Gwynn Paulett - Chairman Devon Dowsers.
